Who is Bastet?
Endless volumes have been and could continue to be written on Bastet. First mentioned as early as the Second Dynasty of Egypt, this ancient feline goddess predates even Isis. Millennia later in Greece, she became known as Artemis. In Roman civilization, she became known as Diana. Until November 2009, historians believed she was worshiped mainly in Lower Egypt. Then, a temple to her was discovered at the ancient site of Alexandria, proof her influence went far beyond her main city of Bubastis.
Often erroneously linked to Sekhmet as Sekhmet’s sister or twin or flip side of the same coin, Bastet stands alone as a completely separate goddess in her own right. She was considered the embodiment of joy, and protector of women, children and cats.
Bast, Bastet, Ubasti and Pasch are just a few of the versions of her name. Bastet’s Kindle chose to use the version of her name currently in use in contemporary Egypt.
